Signs of Impending Volcanic Eruption

Are you ready when a volcano erupts suddenly without prior notice? I know we're not ready. In this lesson, we will tackle the signs of impending volcanic eruption. Like love, volcanoes also have signs whether it is erupting or not. Let us start.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the government agency tasked with monitoring earthquakes and volcanoes in the country, the following are commonly observed signs that a volcano is about to erupt. These may vary from one volcano and another.

-1-

Increase in the frequency of volcanic quakes with rumbling sounds; occurrence of volcanic tremors.

-2-

Mayon Volcano ashes January 2018

Increased steaming activity; change in color of steam emission from white to gray due to entrained ash.

-3-

Crater Glow

Crater glow due to presence of magma at or near the crater.

-4-

Ground Fissuring

Ground swells (or inflation), ground tilt and ground fissuring due to magma intrusion.

-5-

Landslide

Localized landslides, rockfalls and landslides from the summit area which are not attributable to heavy rains.

-6-

Noticeable increase in the extent of drying up of vegetation around the volcano’s upper slopes

-7-

Hot Spring near Taal Volcano

Increase in the temperature of hot springs, wells (e.g., Bulusan and Canlaon) and crater lake (e.g, Taal) near the volcano.

-8-

Noticeable variation in the chemical content of springs, crater lakes within the vicinity of the volcano;

-9-

Drying up of springs/wells around the volcano.

-10-

Development of new thermal areas and/or reactivation of old ones; (appearance of solfataras)

NEWS ABOUT VOLCANO:

Alert level 2 raised over Mayon after phreatic eruption

GUINOBATAN, Albay—The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Mayon Volcano’s alert status to Alert Level 2 early Sunday.

Mayon, one of the most active volcanos in the country, spewed grayish steam and ash plume that reached 2.5 kilometers Saturday in a phreatic eruption that lasted for an hour and 47 minutes starting 4:21 p.m.

Residents are now advised not to enter the 6-kilometer radius permanent danger zone (PDZ) to avoid harm from explosions, rock fall, and landslides that may occur in the area.(solve code for more)
