Introduction to Volcanoes

Our earth is a lovely place to have but the earth's land resources like mountains, field, plateaus and other more as we see it today is believed to have gone through many form and semblance, with about ¾ of it being expunged by the action of volcanoes. An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis, flash floods, landslides, earthquakes, and rockfalls.

Erupting volcano

A volcano is a rupture in the crust of a planetary-mass object, such as Earth, that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface. [1] It is also an opening on the surface of a planet or moon that allows material warmer than its surroundings to escape from its interior. When this material escapes, it causes an eruption. An eruption can be explosive, sending material high into the sky. Or it can be calmer, with gentle flows of material. [2]

The word volcano is derived from the name of Vulcano, a volcanic island in the Aeolian Islands of Italy whose name in turn comes from Vulcan, the god of fire in Roman mythology. [1]

Volcanoes usually occur at weak zones or points in the earth’s crust including constructive boundaries where two tectonic plates are moving away from each other and destructive boundaries where the plates are moving towards each other.[3]

A lot of people are studying and researching about. The study of volcanoes is called volcanology, sometimes spelled vulcanology.[1] The people studying concepts about volcanoes are called vulcanologists.

Mayon Volcano

Volcanoes in the Philippines are active for it is included in the Pacific Ring of Fire where a lot of volcanoes are surrounded to this imaginary ring. One of the most active volcano in the Philippines is the Mayon Volcano which is known as the “Perfect cone” for its symmetrical shape. This volcano in Albay is considered to be a threat only in rare occasions. This volcano is recorded to have almost 50 times of eruptions for the past 400 years. [4]
